A workaround if you can't get MATLAB to run:

(Assuming MATLAB is installed in /opt/matlab)

sed -i 's/XINERAMA/FAKEEXTN/g' /opt/matlab/sys/java/jre/glnx86/jre1.5.0/lib/i386/xawt/libmawt.so
